After the pope’s death, his ring (called the Fisherman’s Ring) is removed and destroyed
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and long-running events, the selection of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Many of the actions taken by Cardinal Lawrence and the rest of the cardinals during the film’s conclave process are true to the Catholic faith and centuries of tradition. The Vatican officially announces that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant. The papal apartment is closed with a crimson ribbon and sealed with a papal wax seal.

Lawrence: Our faith is a living thing precisely because it walks hand in hand with doubt. If there were only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery. Let us pray that God will grant us a pope who doubts. And that he will grant us a pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and continues.

The acting, plot, dialogue and cinematography are perfect from start to finish, but the warning signs are already there earlier in the film. When the potential candidates talk about being a new liberal progressive church, you wonder where else they are going with this and boy, do they. I let the odd tonal shift slide but the ending, which I won’t spoil, is from another film and has the protagonist going against everything they are aiming for during the film.
