Scenario
A family is invited to spend an entire weekend in a remote house in the countryside, but as the weekend progresses, they realize there is a dark side to the family who invited them. Blumhouse Productions has been a major force in the horror genre since 2007, when Paranormal Activity became a worldwide sensation. The story is inspired by the experiences of Christian Tafdrup, director of the original Danish film Speak No Evil (2022), who befriended a Dutch couple while on vacation in Tuscany with his wife. Although the Dutch were a bit socially awkward, both couples got along very well, and after returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from the Dutch family to go to the Netherlands. He briefly considered it, but decided that it would feel weird being around people he didn’t really know; her story for the film came about when she let loose her darkest fantasies about what might have happened if she had agreed (while still maintaining that the original Dutch couple never gave off bad vibes). No pun intended: if you’ve seen the European original (which is not even 2 years old), you might understand what I’m trying to convey. To watch this, it probably makes sense to not have seen it – you might think! Yet, while watching this (and it seems to mostly stick to the blueprint), this movie seems to be trying to „fix“ things some people didn’t like about the original…

the son is one of those things… the illness can be hard to deal with… your situation makes you lose your passion… or it could make you lose it. Not here – and it’s elevating the movie. he’s really the heart of the movie.

His performance is subtle and great at the same time. I don’t remember every little thing about the original and I don’t want to offend the original actors… so let’s just say he’s great in this. The acting and overall writing work great, with some twists added… even though the tweaks at first might not seem that consequential… but by the end (literally) we get something different…
for different reasons!
I like it – 1) because it’s different from the original and 2) because it’s a better fit for the movie and the characters it has to offer! I was skeptical, but it’s just as good as the original… Don’t throw stones at me… The final season of „What We Do in the Shadows“ is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
