Board Candidates
When they select board members, schools are usually looking for those who can communicate with district voters and communicate a higher-level vision for the school, which will help them achieve their goals. They are also looking for individuals with relevant work experience in law, business and insurance/managed care, education, medicine, finance/banking/real estate, marketing information technology, and real estate.
Board members can be chosen by the nomination committee or from the floor during open nominations. The nomination committee should conduct interviews with potential candidates to determine if they are a good fit to the board and possess the necessary skills and qualifications for the role. The committee should also consider the diversity of the candidates and their commitment towards the cause of the organisation.
The nomination process should include a discussion regarding the expectations of the board members, such as their financial contributions as well as their participation in fundraising and professional advice regarding the management of the institution. This should be documented in a written letter of agreement, which new members are asked to sign.
It is important to allow write-ins in the election period for candidates who were not nominated. This will ensure a true representation of the preferences of voters and avoids the Ballot Order Effect where voters tend to favor candidates at the top of the ballot. It is also beneficial to include an „Abstain from voting“ option to keep voters from deciding to vote for candidates who do not align with the ideals of their school.
